Govt. to conduct another round of animal census

Colombo, April 9 (Daily Mirror) - Agriculture Minister K. D. Lal Kantha said the government was expecting to conduct another round of animal census as the previous census could not be considered completely accurate.

The Minister said most countries in the world carry out animal management programmes after conducting the animal census.

Speaking to media after the Kandy Development Committee meeting, he said countries like Australia conduct animal management on kangaroos after an accurate census.

The Minister said Sri Lanka had never performed an animal census and that the census conducted recently also could not be considered totally accurate.

He said the government expects to carry out a management programme on animals such as monkeys after completing the animal census.

This is ridiculous we can’t compare the kangaroo habitat and movement with the leaping monkeys. The kangaroos are confined to a specific locality. Furthermore the deployment of the government officers as well as the printing of the appropriate forms for a new census is futile. Even the movement of the giant grizzled squirrels are different from the one location to the another. This random sampling system that was already used is not more accurate. Therefore based on scientific approach in consultation with the experts is much more needed to see a better result

But the issue was rocked by the parliament during those days that this tragedy is a severe problem for some particular areas for a long time as well as I also feeling it for my house due to monkeys. Eveyday roof repairing compulsively. And also coconut trees are in vulnerable due to lack of nuts and other jak trees too. All governments neglected this. But new rulers arr welcome for doing anything to controll this.

Nonsensical comment. AKD has to relieve Lal Kantha and his useless deputy Namal Karunaratne from this important ministry. Both are utterly incompetent. The damages caused by Monkeys to the crops and the economy is well known for many years. Take immediate action to mitigate this instead of bowing down to the insensitive so called animal lovers.

Issue is clear for all and the action is being seeked immediately that's why the destruction is raising day by day tragically. It has spread everywhere in the country with number of harms to the people and also harvest. Coconut and other home garden produces are upper level. Better example had come from Thailand and Vietnam, no one people some streets only monkys habitat, they acquired all properties and grabbed sometimes. People are looking at them from into windows and other hidden some holes, monkeys are playing in the courtyard and some vehicles are parked in the road till monkeys removing tragically. If vehicles are harmful to them strike them immediately without fail. More creed means a lunatic action accordingly. All monkeys save under belief that means blind and deaf belief meant a lunacy and relinquish all particular sources. It is also caused to the poverty.
