Colombo, May 11 (Daily Mirror) - While extending his heartfelt condolences to the families of all those who lost their lives in the devastating accident in Garandiella, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the government is taking steps to develop a comprehensive and sustainable strategy to prevent such incidents.

In a condolence message, he said the rising number of road accidents across the country has become a matter of serious concern for the government.

"We are currently taking steps to develop a comprehensive and sustainable strategy to prevent such incidents. We believe that stricter enforcement of existing traffic laws, along with efforts to improve drivers’ attitudes and awareness, can significantly reduce the frequency of these tragedies. In line with this, a dedicated programme is already being planned under the 'Clean Sri Lanka' initiative," he said.

The President said instructions have already been issued to the relevant security and health authorities to ensure that all necessary medical facilities are in place and that prompt action is taken to provide treatment and care to the injured.

You cannot remove the hills and valleys in the hill country. The driving in those locations are different and require technical expertise and experience not driving like a yakko. All bus drivers think driving fast and overtaking is what makes them great drivers to the eyes of the local ignorant population but to any foreigner just a uneducated scum.

The majority of these accidents are results from erratic and irresponsible driving habits of bus drivers. It should be made mandatory for all bus drivers to undergo a intensive safe driving program irrespective of the experience they have. It should be done at their own cost. Road rules must be observed on a much stricter basis and the licenses of the offending drivers be suspended for periods founf fit by the courts. Leave no room for police to to use the opportunity to be influenced by bribes, when enforcing the laws.

Traffic police is the best way to go. Speed checks,Severe fine, confiscation of the driving license, yearly check of the suitability of the vehicle, breathalyser at random of the drivers.

On many occasions buses over taking everyone while picking up and dropping off passengers. On another occasions tipper lorries blaring horn continuously to over take other road users.

Mr. President,with all due respect,you don't need to develop a totally new " comprehensive, sustainable strategy to prevent road accidents". Just ORDER the traffic cops to do their job properly by implementing the existing traffic rules and implement the demerit points system which was introduced years ago but is yet to see the light of day. Please don't be naiive by trying to introduce steps to "improve our drivers' attitudes and awareness". The only language they understand is Money. Traffic fines are the only way to stop reckless driving. Do this and you will be raking in millions into the state coffers every single day and accidents will reduce in numbers as road discipline improves. But unfortunately your government like all previous ones will only stand by watch while hundreds of innocent people are being MURDERED by morons behind the wheels. Your government like all previous governments lacks the backbone to even implement the existing traffic laws. Pls walk the talk Mr.Pres

All drivers who are in public transport must be tested for drugs annually. Yearly a certificate should be issued for road worthiness of the vehicles. That is testing brakes, emergency breaks, working condition of engines and proper working of head lights and all safety features should be tested. In addition, the drivers should be educated on the proper ways on treating passengers with respect!

Instead of this long theoretical plan, just employ your red army to punish erratic drivers who are violating road rules everywhere everyday. Just ask them to stand on the side of the road with a mobile camera to record videos. First give the eradicated drivers a written warning. Second , fine them, third jail and last cancel the driving license and more community service. Then you will see a remarkable improvement. Everyone who takes a wheel into hand wants to overtake Everyone else. They have no respect to spend limits too.

Should arrest bus drivers who think that they own the road. Some bus drivers overtake on the wrong side of the road without going in the queue of traffic lanes. It was terrible experience close to Kandy road before Pasyala junction!. Driving licences should be cancelled if this menace is to be stopped.
