The US Embassy in Sri Lanka urged the government to uphold the rights of the people to express their views.

U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung said in a twitter post that using laws that don’t conform with international human rights standards such as the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) would erode democracy in Sri Lanka.

"Using laws that don’t conform with international human rights standards – like the PTA – erodes democracy in Sri Lanka. We encourage the government to uphold the rights of the people to express their views," she tweeted.

Maybe U.S. persons in US should start about how Mahatma Gandhi broke the British control with peaceful protest as civil disobedience. If all in country work together and we can be disobedient to the military. US should speak up about it's effectiveness from the US. They do it in other country. The U.S. Ambassador to Julie Chung with her strong encouragement might as well be speaking to a wall, under the sea. Sorry to say Sri Lanka government and businesses doesn't care about international standards, unless it's about money.

Did the US embassy also have a hand in the Aragalaya political side of things? Who funded the food communication devices etc for the aragalaya? As Sri Lankans we do agree that our freedom of speech or protest should not be violated. However US seems to be having a keen (or vested) interest in unsettling Sri Lanka. A country that sends billions of dollars of war material in a matter of months to Ukraine cannot find a decent solution to solve the hunger problems of the rest of the world for the past so many decades.

Ambassador, maam Human Rights is best promoted by a country that actually practices it instead of the US. True, SL has a fair share of problems around HR. However your hypocrisy in global affairs makes us look at you with disdain when you preach to us on HR. Dont use SL to gain brownie points over China.

Let America return stolen land from the native Americans. Let American shine the light of human rights before you start preaching to the rest of the world how you expect them to govern! as soon as the war started US sent billions of dollars worth of arms to Ukraine-end result more deaths on both sides. If you are really concerned about HR why not divert some of those billions to SL to overcome the economic crisis

There is never a good time to crackdown on citizens. Can you please consider your utterances. Better you take action, and not talk anymore. Can you raise the possibility of sanction non-democratic practices here. Financial sanction, short term pain, long term great benefit for citizens.
