Colombo, April 24 (Daily Mirror) - Taking the government to task on a series of recent scams including the hacking of $ 2.5 million, the joint opposition yesterday said the entire Cabinet should resign and pave the way for a snap election.
The call was made by opposition parties which included the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), United National Party (UNP), Sarwa Jana Balaya and a few small parties.
“We have seen a number of scams during the past weeks which included the coal procurement scam, the fuel scam and now the hacking of $ 2.5 million. The government has clearly displayed its inability. Also a single minister cannot plan and execute scams as the inferior coal purchase deal. He cannot do it without the full support of the Cabinet. Therefore, we want the government to resign,” former Minister G. L. Peiris told a media briefing.
Also he said the hacking incident could result in people losing trust in banks. “People losing their trust in banks is one of the worst things that could happen to a country’s economy,” he said.
Former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said the hacking poses a challenge for Sri Lanka to maintain its financial security and safeguard its credit ratings. He said the Central Bank should carry out a due diligence test on the hacking incident.
“There are few masters of money laundering attached to the Presidential Secretariat,” he also said.
Furthermore, he said the country will face a fuel crisis by June this year due to the procurement of inferior quality coal. “The crisis will come up as a result of using thermal power to meet the shortfall of electricity brought on by inferior quality coal,” he questioned.
He questioned as to why the recent spot tender to purchase coal was given to the same company which supplied inferior quality coal.
Former MP Ajith Mannaperuma said the government should resign and hold a snap election to allow the people to elect the new administration.
