The government should intervene to stop the unusual price increase of medicine and to protect people's lives, the Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) said.
GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said the prices of essential medicines have increased by 300%. The increase in the prices of medicines at present is unaffordable for people.
"The pressure of increasing the price due to the depreciation of the rupee against the dollar should not be put on the people." Therefore, the government should bear a certain percentage of the increase in the price of medicines," Mr. Aluthge said.
He said the Price Control Committee of the Drug Regulatory Authority should meet immediately and take an urgent decision in this regard.
The lives of patients are at serious risk due to the increase in almost all types of drugs, including anti-biotics and pain killers. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
