The government is plotting to weaken the security forces through the budget proposal which called for the review on the defence strategy called “National Security - 2030”, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka said today.
Speaking during the budget debate, he told Parliament that a similar proposal was brought in 2002 and attempted to reduce the strength of the armed forces.
"When we questioned then, they said it was not reducing the strength but bringing the security forces to the required strength. They are attempting to tamper with the military again," he said.
Criticizing the attack on protesters, MP Fonseka said the Aragalaya should continue until the country is rescued from the corrupt political culture. He said international community should intervene to stop state terrorism and stop apprehending people.
"We appeal to Sri Lankan expatriates overseas not to send a single dollar to Sri Lanka until the government stops the state-sponsored terrorism. We request them not to support this government as long as state-sponsored terrorism exists," he said. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)
