Colombo, August 25 (Daily Mirror) - Former Minister Ranjith Maddumabandara today accused the government of attempting to suppress the opposition and steer the country towards single-party rule.

Speaking to the media, Maddumabandara said the arrest and remanding of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe amounted to “a deadly attack on democracy.” He claimed that instead of taking action against wrongdoers, the government is targeting opposition leaders to cover up its failure to deliver on promises made to the people.

“The government is moving on a dictatorial journey. They are using the CID and police to act in line with their political agenda,” he said, alleging that information provided to authorities had paved the way for Wickremesinghe’s arrest.

Maddumabandara urged the public to join forces with the opposition to safeguard democracy and the people’s franchise. “The government should catch the thieves, not suppress the opposition,” he said and adding that while the arrest may be part of a political plan, he still had faith in the judiciary.

Your leadership and most members are worried about getting arrested for your past corrupt activity. It looks like single party rule because the opposition doesn't attend parliament when in session. The 159 seats given by the people is more than adequate for a single party rule, but NPP is doing things democratically and that's hurting lot of people who are aware of their fate. NPP is doing everything through the legal system, not the kangaroo courts we had in the past - e.g. Sarath Fonseka.

The implication being that no matter how corrupt the opposition is, you can't act against them because the country needs an opposition. It's the "it's us or nothing" argument. At least Cassi is making a point about the govt moving slow on their own people. This is just grasping at straws.

NPP government does not need to do anything except giving freed hand to the law enforcement agencies to act according to the law without political interference.
