Govt. lacks courage to probe Ranil’s major crimes: Janabalaya Movement

Colombo, August 25 (Daily Mirror) - The Janabalaya Movement today said that although there are serious grounds on which former President Ranil Wickremesinghe could have been arrested, the incumbent government lacks the courage to investigate into his alleged major crimes, let alone charge him over a minor offense such as misappropriation of public funds.

At an emergency media briefing to discuss the political tensions following Wickremesinghe’s arrest and the future alignment of the Government and Opposition, Janabalaya spokesman Vidarshana Kannangara stressed that the move should not be seen as an attack on democracy.

He said a majority of the people still support the incumbent government and warned that those portraying the arrest as undemocratic were simply acting as Opposition sympathisers.

“If the government truly wanted to act against Wickremesinghe, it could have charged him over far more serious crimes including the Batalanda torture chamber, the Central Bank bond scam, and the Easter Sunday bomb attacks,” Kannangara said.

He emphasised that the arrest was not politically motivated but had been carried out in a legal and transparent manner.

So, apparently, Ranil used the transit stay in London to honor the invitation from the university and to attend the wife's graduation ceremony. There was no additional airfare , only accommodation for transit stay. In the same logic, AKD met party members during visits to other countries similar to those held while he was campaigning. So, wouldn't those be counted as not official?

In the United States and other countries, people are sentenced to 250 years in prison, for example. As long as it serves justice, a criminal should be sentenced for all crimes committed. With good behaviour, a pardon may be granted after 170 years.

This guy Vidharshana is taking as the Janabalaya government has done a favor to Ranil Wickramasinghe. If they did a favor the government should be taken to task to meddling with the justice system. I may seek justice for this statement.The reality is those other cases are closed. If the NPP brings a case they will give a wrong picture of the Justice System in Sri Lanka. The government may then pack up bags. The NPP not being to read the sentiments of the people is huge blow for the NPP government. At the same token if AKD goes to his mother that also could be a case against AKD. Rajaya wada anagana.

By reading some of the above comments, I feel Sri Lanka has wasted Trillions of rupees in free education. The memories of Sri Lankans are very short, as Prabakaran said, they last only for 14 days. These people with short memories have already forgotten the hardships Sri Lankans underwent during the economic downturn period. Agreed 100%.There are very serious corruption charges against RW. Yet, Malimaawa also not a clean party and therefore, they don't have that commitment to bring him to justice.
