Govt. eager to hold LG elections before popularity dips: MP Rasamanickam

Colombo, Feb 18 (Daily Mirror) - Representatives from various political parties in Parliament convened with the Election Commission to discuss the scheduling of the upcoming local government elections.

Opposition party representatives emphasised the need for the Election Commission to select a date that will allow Members of Parliament to fulfill their legislative duties without disruption, particularly during the budget debate.

They expressed concerns that the nomination and campaigning process could interfere with their Parliamentary obligations.

MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam said the government is eager to hold elections before its popularity begins to decline.

"A significant challenge for the government could be the timing of salary payments for government employees in April, potentially exposing its failure to deliver on pre-election promises and fostering disillusionment among its voter base. We urged the Election Commission to uphold its independence and credibility, resisting any political pressure from the government," the MP said.
