The government is gearing up to introduce a new piece of legislation to put an end to the scourge of ragging, the inhumane harassment faced by university freshmen.

State Minister of Higher Education Suren Raghavan, made this announcement during a press conference, emphasizing the gravity of the issue.

A committee, appointed by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, has been tasked with formulating this crucial legislation aimed at curbing ragging. Minister Raghavan stressed that the days of ragging in universities are numbered.

He explained that this committee comprises representatives from the President's office, the Prime Minister, the University Grants Commission (UGC), the police, and the Vice Chancellors Association. Together, they will delve into the issue of ragging and play a pivotal role in eradicating this social menace once and for all.

Minister Raghavan emphasized the government's unwavering commitment to implementing this new law, recalling a statement made by the late MP Neelan Thiruchelvam, who questioned the practical enforcement of laws in Sri Lanka.

He said under the impending legislation, Vice Chancellors of universities and other administrators will be held accountable in case ragging incidents occur in state universities. State institutions responsible for higher education will always be held liable whenever the rights of a university student are violated, as outlined in the upcoming laws. This proactive approach underscores the government's determination to protect the well-being of university students and ensure a harassment-free environment for them. (Yohan Perera)

There should be student care hotline at all universities. Students should able to lodge complaints online.

yeah, but knowing our Sri Lankans for sure the hotline also will be operated by Police creeps

This law against ragging is far overdue. However governments wanted to please the uncultured raggers to get their votes. A disgrace to Sri Lanka. Anyone involved in ragging should be dismissed and no government appointments. Full stop.

The best way to irradicate ragging is by forming hit squads and instilling fear psychosis in the raggers

Great initiative. Please introduce it soon and take severe action on the perpetrators.

JVP will oppose the legislation. Ragging is their way of happiness.

Sad that the same levels of accountability do not apply to those in public office

@Decent person- I agree. It's a crying shame for responsible governments or authorities to have ignored such vulgar acts by these frustrated jealous souls. Dismissal from university for the guilty does not go far enough, criminal charges should follow the perpetrators and provision for civil action by the victims should also be facilitated.

Ragging culture has to be stopped, when I was doing the A/L's started to feel stressed about going to Uni and face ragging, I knew I am not the only one to feel this way.
