Colombo Dec 9 (Daily Mirror) - In the wake of reports about three Sri Lankan ex-military personnel dying in Ukraine in the war with Russia, Foreign Minister Ali Sabry said Sri Lanka, as a country, had made every possible effort to prevent recruits through local agents.
The minister said the Sri Lankan security authorities previously got wind of a local agent recruiting mercenaries to fight on behalf of Ukraine against Russia, and it was dealt with. However, the minister said the government could not exercise any control over any national who left the country to enter Ukraine for fighting.
Russia has not yet registered any protest with Sri Lanka over the involvement of Sri Lankans.
Three former members of the Sri Lankan military, including Captain Ranish Hewage, who was the commander of the First Special Forces of The International Legion of Territorial Defence of Ukraine, or the Ukrainian Foreign Legion, were killed on Monday in a Russian military attack.
Reports said that Captain Hewage and his fellow two Sri Lankan former military personnel were killed in Bakhmut, a city in Ukraine, during a rescue operation.
The Sri Lankan Embassy in Türkiye which is concurrently accredited to Ukraine is aware of the deaths of these Sri Lankans and awaits official confirmation from the Ukrainian defence authorities.
The embassy said the Ukrainian defence authorities consider such persons as missing in action until their remains are recovered.

These men are not mercenaries, but are employed in the Ukrainian Foreign Legion, which is a unit of the Ukrainian official armed forces. There are foreign legions in many countries, for example in France or Spain. Mercenaries are either groups that have formed privately or work for companies such as Wagner or Black Water, who offer their services to countries or insurgents in order to fight wars for them or to support combat units. For example, the Maldives raid was carried out by a Sri Lankan mercenary group. In Germany, Germans are legally prohibited from fighting for another country's army or for a mercenary group. At the moment, returnees (men and women) who fought for the Islamic State are constantly being condemned by German courts. Sometimes with very harsh and long sentences, depending on what type of crime they committed.

Normally the European Armies don’t have any respect for the non-White armies and no one from Sri Lanka would have been recruited. But we beating the LTTE in 2009 has catapulted the image of the Sri Lankan army to a very high level in all white countries. So Sri Lankan ex-soldiers are much in demand in Ukraine. It is unbelievable our ex- soldiers are fighting the Superpower Russian soldiers , no one would have believed in the past that our soldiers are capable to fight the Russians.

@ Sri Lanka soldiers fighting the Russians, wow!! Unfortunately, this is not correct and may destroy your proud view of Sri Lankan soldiers. Sri Lankan soldiers are still branded as cowards around the world. (100,000 deserters in 3 decades) This is the main reason why other countries on UN missions refuse to accept combat units from Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan soldiers are only used in UN missions for logistical purposes. @ Lion. Unfortunately, you too are in the wrong. Russia cannot win this war. At the moment Russia has 900 young soldiers who die or are seriously injured in combat EVERY DAY, in this war are already hundreds of thousands casualities on russian side. These young men are being used as cannon fodder by Putin in his unlawful war against a peaceful and democratic country to fulfill his megalomaniacal dream of a Greater Russia.

The government wants to stop hiring mercenaries through local agents. But shouldn't people have the freedom to choose? They're just trying to do something good. Sometimes, taking big risks can lead to big rewards. Go, Mercenaries, Go! Time to take down that evil emperor!

It's common all over the world. Many X military fight in other wars all over the world on contract. If you are an expert military person you can make money by providing your service to others. Whats the big deal it's common.
