Govt. committed to ensuring uninterrupted power supply: Cabinet Spokesperson

Colombo, Sept. 23 (Daily Mirror) - Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa today said that it is the responsibility of the government to ensure a continuous supply of electricity and that it is not prepared to allow a power outage.

Responding to questions from journalists on the government’s decision to cancel the leave of employees following the President’s circular declaring all electricity-related services as essential, Dr. Jayatissa said the government would not allow a power outage under any circumstances.

“The government is not prepared to allow a power outage. This has been made an essential service. Therefore, we are saying, please come and work, and if you are unable to work, you can take compensation. This must be done. We cannot move forward without this reform,” the Minister said.

When asked about the possibility of reducing electricity bills through restructuring the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), Dr. Jayatissa said reforms would focus on improving efficiency and cutting costs across different sections of the board.

“It would be good if we could provide relief not only to investors but also to you, the consumers. When the entire board increases the electricity bill, there are several issues presented. We will look at each of these parts one by one to see where the profits and losses are. By taking those parts separately and making them more efficient, we can find the answer. Rather than operating the entire board as a single unit, it is possible to solve some of the problems by coordinating each part but acting separately as companies,” he explained.
