Govt. announces paddy purchase prices

The rates quoted are probably a little higher than prices offered by private millers and somewhat lower than expected by farmers. Whether this can sustain the stipulated selling price of rice will be known shortly.

JVP cadre from top to bottom needs some economic lessons. When the market is prepared to give 180 per kilo what kind of farmer would sell their harvest at 120 per kilo?

These are comparatively high prices that were not paid to the poor farmers for the last 10 years by any government. The private big mill owners were running the country all these years and fleecing the farmers. The Government never bought farmer's paddy instead they let all the warehoused go to waste, now at least the farmers are getting a reasonable price. However please give the farmers at least 130 / - rupees as they are the back bone of our country. The ordinary people won't mind paying a few rupees more for rice if the poor hardworking farmers are happy. The farmers are only asking for a few more rupees to look after their families just above poverty level. Not to buy Rs. 200 Million mercedes Benz cars and V8 vehicles !! .

120 per kilo means 120 x 2 = 1 kilo of rice, so the cost is about 240 per kilo of rice. Can the public expect a reasonable rice price in the future? The government should subsidise the rice.

Imports: Rs 67 at the harbour. Local: Rs 120 for paddy If that doesn’t describe the problem with our economy, I don’t know what else can. Just import the damn Rice and let the farmer grow something else. When it’s a free economy, everyone wins but that concept is beyond comprehension for the NPP communist.

This price formula is apparently reasonable and realistic. Thus the farmers who are not supplying the paddy to the paddy marketing board at the prices being stipulated by government should be clearly identified in the future the fertiliser subsidy should not be granted to such farmers not only that the compensation for the crop damage due to inclement weather should not be paid. The price of the rice varieties should be price controlled for the convenience of the consumers Further the leading rice mill owners who are selling the rice varieties at exorbitant prices should be black listed

This is the price for Paddy, Shelling /Cleaning/Transport/Packaging is not involved. Government needs to buy the paddy and get these process outsourced. Ultimately we wold need to shoulder these costs which would add on to make the price of rice to what it is now /-, so even if the government would drop the price it would be negiligble to common man. Farmers getting a good price is short lived, as the government wont be able to keep up the price, with ever changing cost on transport / electricity on mills etc.,etc.,

Now the price has been fixed, please ensure payment in a timely manner to farmers. If not, farmers will not sell paddy to the government even if the offered price by private people is lower than that of goverment's.

Though there are some smart people commenting on this, it's pretty unfortunate to see the level of maturity and knowledge some people prosses, specially how economics work. I think for good measure, if the Govt intends to buy paddy directly from the farmers, it's wise they also run their own mills so that private sector doesn't have a room to dictate the prices or control the supply.
