Govt. admits to duplicate payment to RDA contractors

Colombo, April 29 (Daily Mirror) - While admitting the duplicate payments to Road Development Authority(RDA) contractors, the government yesterday said the Bank of Ceylon (BOC) which made the payment is taking action to recover the duplicate payments as per the mechanism available for such recoveries.

Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa told the weekly Cabinet briefing that the duplicate payment has no impact to RDA accounts or personal accounts.

He said an error has occurred in the fund transmission through the Internal Payment File and that the banks have a system to recover such duplicate payments.

However, the Road Development Authority (RDA) earlier clarified that no such "double-payment" to contractors has occurred.

The RDA said that its financial records confirm no duplicate transactions were processed from its accounts and that the institution has not suffered any financial loss.

In such a backdrop, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa said in a post on X that a Bank of Ceylon ‘Recall of Funds’ notice confirms that Rs. 263 million was erroneously remitted to contractors due to a ‘system error.’

The MP said quoting a BOC statement that over Rs. 51 million is still missing.
