Government to modernize public transport for safety and convenience

Colombo, April 9 (Daily Mirror) - The government’s objective is to transform public transportation into a safe, technologically advanced service that can be used with convenience by all citizens. 

In line with this vision, the Prime Minister recently undertook an inspection tour of the newly renovated Colombo Central Bus Stand, a key milestone in the country’s ongoing public transport development programme.

The Colombo Central Bus Stand, which has stood for over six decades, had long awaited proper maintenance. Now, after extensive renovation, it has been restored and officially reopened to the public on April 8, offering a modernized and more comfortable travel experience. The refurbishment is part of a broader initiative aimed at improving the quality and reliability of public transportation services.

During the visit, the Prime Minister observed the upgraded facilities and expressed satisfaction with the improvements made to ensure passenger comfort and safety. Special attention has been given to the needs of women, particularly with the introduction of a modern rest area designed to provide privacy for nursing mothers travelling long distances—a feature that was notably appreciated.

The inspection also included a review of the newly implemented passenger seat reservation system and enhanced information services, both of which are designed to make commuting more efficient and user-friendly. Additionally, the Prime Minister examined the modern surveillance systems and other security measures installed within the premises to ensure the safety of all passengers.

Engaging directly with commuters, the Prime Minister inquired about their experiences and feedback regarding the upgraded facilities and services. Passengers expressed their views on the improvements, highlighting the benefits of the renovated transport hub.

The visit underscored the government’s continued commitment to upgrading public transportation infrastructure, ensuring it is safer, more efficient, and accessible to all citizens.
