Colombo, May 30 (Daily Mirror) - The country's entire transport system will be subject to change in the near future with the introduction of a hub-and-spoke model where private and public buses will operate on a joint time table, Deputy Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Chathuranga Abeysinghe said.

The Deputy Minister told reporters that the government is planning to introduce a hub-and-spoke model for the transport system after identifying the main cities and feeding routes seperately.

He said private and public buses will run on a joint time table.

"That is the policy of the government. The private sector has to adhere to that," he said.

Well make it mandatory that all buses have a single colour, No modifications, No Fancy Decorations, No Curtains, Numbers of Owners Displayed etc. Nowhere in the world do you see public transport buses having such decorations and not being uniform. Buses must be fitted with speed limiters, internal CCTV Camera's. Most importantly they must follow lane discipline. Else no matter what hub and spoke or Star system you derive, nothing will change.

That is a good start. And in parallel please also a hub-and-spoke model around each Expressway interchange. It is nonsense that from e.g. Makumbara/Kottawa to Hikkaduwa, which would be 1.30 hours via E01 plus local road from Baddegama interchange, the sole public transport option is bus to Galle and then another bus back (over the old road) to Hikka. Total 2.30 hours. Each interchange should have a bus stop where EX buses interrupt their trip, drop off and collect passengers, and continue on the Expressway. And at that same bus stop, a small hub, local 'spoke' buses bring the passengers to and from their final destination...

Where are the so-called "public" busses?? Once in awhile you can see a SLCTB bus on the 100 or 102 route on Galle road as well as on most other routes! First of all get some decent, educated drivers and conductors PLEASE!! Whatever you are planning to do will be just "talk" only, if you don't treat the root causes which are many!!

It's good that the minister has 'discovered' the hub and spoke model, in use globally. However, are we also going to improve the condition of the vehicles connecting the hubs and spokes. I.e the using busses and three wheelers?. Or is that left as unfinished??

GOOD IDEA, THIS WAY THE ROUTES WILL BE SPREAD TO BOTH OPERATORS AND NO ONE OPERATOR CAN CLAIM A MONOPOLY ON ROUTES. USUALLY PRIVATE BUSES RUN ON LONG ROUTES, THIS SYSTEM WILL GIVE THEM A MIX. MAKE SURE BOTH PARTY'S ARE THE THE TABLE WHEN ROUTES ARE BEING FINALIZED TO AVOID ANY MISUNDERSTANDINGS BETWEEN THE TWO OPERATORS AND ISSUES TO CROP UP. ONCE THIS IS DONE AND ROUTES ESTABLISHED, TIMETABLES TO BE PUT INTO PRINT AND NO CHANGES IN ORDER TO ENSURE THE SMOOTH RUNNING OF ALL ROUTES. BOTH HEADS OF OPERATORS TO ENSURE THAN DRIVERS STICK TO THE TIME TABLES AND NO EXCUSES FOR LATE DEPARTURES AND OR ARRIVALS. IN ORDER TO ENSURE THAT PEOPLE GET TO THEIR DESTINATIONS IN TIME, ESPECIALLY WORKERS.

Using bullshit jargon like hub-and-spoke would never solve the problems of the transport system. On one hand the private sector has come to function on the platform of profit whilst the Ceylon Transport Service is an entity based on commuter service to the public. With so many private buses and government buses it is impossible to place these buses to work on a time schedule. You think you know a lot but in fact people of your calibre are spokes in the wheel for the smooth functioning of the transport system. First get a hands on experience in any field before implementing policy!!!!
