Colombo, Sept. 14 (Daily Mirror) - A network of community health centers will be established across the country to provide early diagnosis, treatment, follow-up care, and referrals to hospitals, Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.
As a pilot project, 10 centers will be set up in five districts from September 26. The foundation stone for 100 centers will be laid within the next few months, with plans to expand the network to 1,000 centers within three years.
The Minister made these remarks while attending the “Arogya” mobile health clinic program in the Eheliyagoda Divisional Secretariat Division of the Ratnapura District.
Highlighting the rising threat of non-communicable diseases, Minister Jayatissa said the new health centers and mobile clinics aim to protect people by encouraging early testing and treatment. He noted that currently, only a limited number of people at risk undergo testing, and even fewer continue with regular treatment.
The Minister also said the importance of preparing for an aging population, pointing out that 25% of the country’s population will be elderly in the coming years. He added that mobile clinics will continue to be conducted islandwide, with special focus on nutrition and mental health.
