Government to commence petroleum exploration: President

Colombo, September 17 (Daily Mirror)- The government will commence petroleum exploration with the assistance of scientists and experts in the field, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today.

He said this at the commencement of the construction work on six additional oil storage tanks at the Kolonnawa Petroleum Storage Complex today.

The President said scientists and experts have already volunteered their services in petroleum exploration.

"Our people often hear stories about the presence of oil only during election seasons. The first bottle of crude oil was shown during the 1970 election. At present, we place our trust in professionals and entrust them with the responsibility, while the government only provides the necessary facilities," he said.

Just because we have fossil fuels does not mean we need to use it. While we transition away, we can still depend on that rather than spending millions of dollars importing it. At the same time, the countries that require it will still buy it. Some countries do not have the resources our blessed land has to replace fossil fuels, so until they catch up, we can finally stop depending on tourism and foreign remittances as our country's only source of foreign income.

SL needs to be self sufficient in fossile fuel to cater for attracting heavy industrial investments. In 1936, Britain was ready to explore for gas and fossile fuel in Trincomalee Bay. War erupting in 1939 , saw the project abandoned. That was the end of the Tank Farm as well. Rest is history. Mannar Bay with its potentials a second best, much undermined by politics and deceit. SL is the only Island nation which does not explore its natural resources, available round the Island.Peoples prosperity and avoiding debt forever, is here.

A nation has to mortgage its resources on others money, for a better future . We have done well, far and over, when SL mortgaged its Mahaweli waters on World Bank loan. Five projects went on at the same time, in five years it was all finished.As it is said: Look at the past, module your future.
