Colombo, March 04 (Daily Mirror) - While there was confusion earlier regarding the legality of agreements involving intermediaries, the government has now secured Cabinet approval for the Korean E-8 visa programme, Deputy Minister of Foreign Employment Arun Hemachandra said.
He said the government is committed to ensuring that the first group of E-8 workers is sent to Korea at a reasonable cost, free from the involvement of illegal intermediaries.
He made this statement during a highly attended ‘Special Public Day’ held at the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) headquarters today.
He emphasised that Ministry and Bureau officials are working directly with the public to resolve issues. The Deputy Minister highlighted the importance of engaging directly with those affected by challenges in the foreign employment sector.
"This sector faces numerous problems, and many individuals have requested a platform to present their complaints, suggestions and ideas. By holding this public day at the Bureau, we are providing a direct opportunity for the public to voice their concerns," he explained.
He also acknowledged various irregularities in the sector, including fraudulent activities involving intermediaries and issues related to employment licenses. Investigations into these matters are currently underway, with the responsible institutions taking legal action against those found guilty.
To continue addressing foreign employment issues and providing timely solutions, it has been decided to hold a ‘Special Public Day’ on a monthly basis.
