Government planning to create doctors for overseas as medical professionals: Minister



Colombo, May 28 (Daily Mirror) - The government is planning to create doctors required not only for the state hospitals but also to send them to foreign countries as medical professions, Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said today.

Speaking at a function to hand over letters of appointment to medical professionals, the Minister said he has held discussions with the Education Minister and the Deans of medical faculties on how to create doctors required for state hospitals and also to send them foreign countries.

"Sri Lanka has received opportunities for this," he said and added that even if the medical professionals go abroad, the government will take the responsibility.

The Minister said that health officials and he had attended the 78th World Health Assembly of the World Health Organisation (WHO) where some countries agreed to allow medical professionals to work in state hospitals in their countries for a definite period of time on government-to-government agreements.

He said medical professional who leave for foreign countries could continue to work in their profession after returning to the country.
