Government planning to create doctors for overseas as medical professionals: Minister

Colombo, May 28 (Daily Mirror) - The government is planning to create doctors required not only for the state hospitals but also to send them to foreign countries as medical professions, Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said today.

Speaking at a function to hand over letters of appointment to medical professionals, the Minister said he has held discussions with the Education Minister and the Deans of medical faculties on how to create doctors required for state hospitals and also to send them foreign countries.

"Sri Lanka has received opportunities for this," he said and added that even if the medical professionals go abroad, the government will take the responsibility.

The Minister said that health officials and he had attended the 78th World Health Assembly of the World Health Organisation (WHO) where some countries agreed to allow medical professionals to work in state hospitals in their countries for a definite period of time on government-to-government agreements.

He said medical professional who leave for foreign countries could continue to work in their profession after returning to the country.

Need to think correctly. Are we training medical professionals to serve other countries? Should we give our medical professionals incentives to serve the country? Service begins at home. Post graduate training, both in and out of the country encouraged. Added incentives for serving areas sadly lacking medical services. These are some of the issues that need to be addressed.

It was JVP that opposed expanded medical education through numerous protests during last 60 years. As a result, many good opportunities were lost not just in medical profession but in all knowledge based job areas. JVP ideology has been a country with poor people doing very basic labour jobs. But now, some elites got into NPP to create a strategy to get power by exploiting the opportunity created due to 2020 2021 economic crisis. But the core JVP adgenda remain same. These talks are only for the media and most are Tom pachas.

Like in all other issues , we have always missed the bus on this golden opportunity: India, Bangladesh, and many other countries have been producing a lot of doctors to meet their local and international needs : many qualified doctors from these countries migrate to some western countries to make their fortunes and yet we have wasted human potentials of our student communities since 1960s ::some of our students failed or refused to enter medical faculties for just one score or one mark: for 65 years you have been denying opportunities to our talented students . Who crime is this? UGC ? Ministry of higher education? Universities ? This is a greatest injustice done to our people by so called politicians: they have money for everything but not for higher education: they didn’t allocate enough money to produce enough doctors: this is done intentionally or unintentionally: Now is time to make a change to this outdated system? First should retain sufficient doctors in the country either by producing locally or bring back foreign students, recognizing their talents. The Govt should consider how much taxpayers money spend for producing a doctor in our university system. Foreign graduates who spent their own money

@pusa, this is your Meeya, the expat remittances are a good source of money. Right now you eat your dhal, salt, rice from those remittances. Doctors mean good money. So it is not necessary to provide this education free, they could start charging those who have money , the rest can get an interest free loan or Scholarship to study. More universities will create more teaching opportunities, more research opportunities, more doctors coming out who will only decide to go abroad if they find a better opportunity. So , a lot of problems are going to get solved. But this idea is coming from Pacha Nanda from National Pacha Pava , it is a big lie. So don't worry. Your tax money is saved.

Your responsibility is to provide better health service to the citizens of the county. Not to send doctors to other counties. Who is paying for doctor’s university expenses.

Ad-hoc opened medical schools like Uwa, Sabaragamuwa and Wayamba not recognised abroad. So they will not accept. Already accepted KDU doctors go abroad and do further study. Is this why you stopped taking to KDU this time? What a 2-talk man! you are!!!

This is a good idea, Sri Lanka has human resources rather than other resources, so developing human resources and finding them employment opportunities abroad is a good idea. Well done NPP government. I think we could pay off all the loans before NPP term is over from stolen money that will be recovered, unpaid liquor taxes that are going to be recovered and savings from reduced government expenses.

All baiyas here, do not understand the strategy . Sri Lanka has enormous human resources which must be utilized for its economy growth. We had tea, rubber, spices exports in golden old days, but no more. look at the world market competition, which place Sri Lanka stands here. Its time to think alternatives, but we are late, and its ok to start even at late. Now also educated professionals are leaving for overseas jobs, who were the product of our tax payment, right?. So We should implement a strategy to utilize our human resource effectively in all the professions. let it be medical, engineering, finance, nursing, administration, domestic assistant, transport, logistic and etc. Educate our students, train them for overseas market and facilitate. It will definitely help the economy. Also every child who passed the A/L exam must be included for higher studies for any field and help them to obtain a descent qualification. Lets correct the old lethargic legacy living style.
