Government moves to address salt shortage as shipments expected this week

Colombo, May 15 (Daily Mirror) - The Trade Ministry has taken urgent measures to import sufficient stocks of salt in response to a developing shortage in the market, with shipments expected to arrive within the week, officials confirmed.

Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Chairman Hemantha Samarakoon told the media today that while salt remains a daily necessity for households, it has not been officially declared an essential consumer item under current regulations. Nonetheless, the Authority retains the legal authority to monitor the market, conduct raids and take legal action against traders who fail to display the maximum retail prices or those engage in hoarding.

“We became aware of stockpiling concerns through both media reports and public complaints,” Samarakoon said, adding that the CAA is actively addressing the situation to prevent an undue market pressure.

Amid growing public concern, the CAA urged both consumers and traders not to panic or create an artificial demand, assuring that adequate stocks will be available soon. The Chairman emphasised the importance of maintaining regular purchasing habits to ensure a smooth market recovery.

The Authority also reaffirmed its commitment to closely monitoring the situation and taking decisive action against any attempts at market exploitation, including price manipulation and unnecessary stockpiling.

With imports due shortly, the CAA Chairman expressed confidence that the supply will stabilise in the coming days, easing concerns among consumers and restoring normalcy to the market.
