Government has ended culture of political favoritism: Bimal Rathnayake

Colombo, Sept. 8 (Daily Mirror) - Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Rathnayake said the government has ended the culture of political favoritism, stressing that everyone is subject to the people’s mandate and no one is above it.

He made these remarks while attending the ceremony to present permanent appointment letters to casual workers of the Road Development Authority (RDA) as Chief Guest. The minister said the appointments are now being made equally, regardless of party, color, province, or ethnicity, reflecting the September 21 mandate.

“Previous governments recruited employees to state institutions based on politics. The country knows how politicized state institutions, including the RDA, had become. Crores of rupees were wasted due to political appointments. The courageous decision taken by the people on September 21, 2024, set this country on a new path. That corrupt era has ended, and a government committed to equality and accountability has now emerged,” he said.

During the event, permanent appointment letters were awarded to 704 employees from all nine provinces, including the North and East. These workers, absorbed into the Authority after 2017, will now contribute to services across every district.

Highlighting past irregularities, Minister Rathnayake said RDA recruitments and confirmations had been politicized, while funds were embezzled in the name of development. He accused former rulers of using business groups, bureaucrats, and employees as henchmen to pursue selfish political objectives.

“The people’s mandate on September 21 was to eliminate that corrupt culture and to establish a government accountable to the people. This government is committed to protecting employment rights, which cannot be compromised for political or administrative reasons. Job security brings stability to life, and today that stability has been ensured,” the minister added.

Calling on the public to work for the collective good, Minister Rathnayake said, “Let us create a culture where we think of the country first and serve others. This country belongs to you. The government will protect you, but you too must serve the nation and its people.”
