Government bound to take action against publishing false, distorted news: Nalinda

Colombo, Dec. 26 (Daily Mirror)- Claiming that the government will not resort to media suppression at any cost, Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said today that the government is bound to take action against any media that spreads false and distorted news.

He told reporters that social media platforms, electronic and print media can criticise the government and point out its shortcomings.

The Minister said, however, the government has noticed that certain television channels and social media spread false and distorted news, posing a threat to national security, obstructing the rebuilding efforts after the Ditwah cyclone and creating doubt about the health sector.

He said people also request the government to take action in such occasions and that they accuse the government of not taking action against them.

He said the government only intervenes to rectify once a false or distorted news is published and added that the government will not resort to the suppression of media at any cost.

Everyone should be under the same law. Especially, no one can use public property, such as frequencies, for their own agendas and to shape the country's political landscape by spreading and creating false news as per their own requirements.

What kind government are you? Nalinda, you have nothing to do with controlling media for falls news. Lodge a complain and go to courts. There is no space for you to directly intervene in this regards. Do you think we as public going to stay quiet and watching what ever you guys do? No. Keep in mind wr people are much more powerful than 3% of you here.
