Government announces list of holidays for 2026

The Government has officially announced the list of Public and Bank Holidays for the year 2026.

This has been announced via a Gazette Extraordinary issued on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

The declaration, made under the Holidays Act, No. 29 of 1971, confirms a total of 26 holidays for the upcoming year.

The list was published by Dr. A.H.M.H. Abayarathna, Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government.

Instead of publishing holidays, you should publish working days to save printing space as holidays are more than the working days in SL.

No political party or public support exists to reduce holidays. A struggling small country like ours has holidays for all major religions, including the customary monthly Poya holiday. All of this contributes to a poor work ethic—not to mention the additional costs to businesses, which have to pay extra if they want employees to work on those days. From my direct experience in the software industry, I know how many overseas companies are unwilling to work with Sri Lankan firms because of this. I was hoping that at least the JVP-backed government, which is supposedly not a religion-first party, would have addressed this. Sadly, they too don’t seem to have the backbone to make difficult decisions.

Why do you need holidays every bloody month for a Poya day? Waste of productivity. For the whole year, SL should only have Vesak, Christmas and Deevali. Not every month. Workers in SL, specially public servants, are not working even on work days. Why give those lazy buggers more time off?
