Gammanpila says Gota received final document in May

Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) Leader Udaya Gammanpila today said former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa received the final document pertaining to the renunciation of his US citizenship in May this year.

He expressed these views to the media after giving evidence before the Commission to investigate serious acts of fraud and corruption taken place during the present government, over a case where MP Rishad Bathiudeen had allegedly acquired some 3,000 acres of lands in Mannar in an illegal manner.

MP Gammanpila said the US State Department sent the final document in May to Mr Rajapaksa confirming his citizenship renunciation and his name would be included in the list which will be released early next month. “There is no need to panic over Gotabaya Rajapaksa's name not appearing in the list which includes names of those renounced US citizenship by March 31, since he received the final document in May.

The next list which includes names of those renounced US citizenship by June 30, will be released in early next month and it will have Gotabaya Rajapaksa's name," he said.

MP Gammanpila said that he is one of a handful of people who saw the final document and therefore, said the citizenship renunciation process of Mr.Rajapaksa had been completed 100 per cent. (Lahiru Pothmulla)
