Gammanpila files complaint over ruling MPs’ use of salaries for party funds

Colombo, Sept. 29 (Daily Mirror) - Pivithuru Hela Urumaya leader Udaya Gammanpila filed a complaint with the Bribery Commission today alleging that government MPs are diverting their monthly salaries to party funds for political activities.

Speaking to the media after lodging the complaint, Gammanpila said MPs cannot spend their allowances at their discretion.

“The fact that 159 government MPs receive over Rs. 30 million collectively each month and credit it to the party fund for political purposes constitutes a misuse of public funds,” he stated.

Gammanpila further claimed that the funds are being used to pay for party-related expenses, including telephone bills, fuel and office maintenance, before being deployed for political activities.

“This amounts to the misappropriation of more than Rs. 30 million per month by all 159 MPs, plus the President,” he added, urging the Bribery Commission to investigate into the matter.

If these MPs donate their salaries willingly and whatever they get in return by their party ensures that corruption is eradicated in the legislature even forcibly, the citizens don't mind that. Gammanpila filing a complaint with the Bribery commission because there is such an attempt to eradicate corruption is also understandable because he needs corruption to come back so that guys like him and his backers can only get back to their familiar territory in future politics then.

Did Gammanpila pass the law exams? What is there to prevent MPs from diverting their salaries to their party fund if they do it willingly. To me it appear to be a donation for the party. The party can use such money for any purpose that is not illegal. If Gammanpila cannot understand that I doubt if he passed the law exams or passed them they way some other prominent politicians did

Objectively speaking the salary a MP gets his personal matter and how he spends that is nobodies business and further such salary is tax free. However MPs receives any allowance from the party is taxable as it is other income. MPs should declare such amount received in their assets and liabilities declaration if not it is an offence. It appears that comrades are continuing to deceive the gullible public and much more the gullible supporters.
