GMOA warns of islandwide strike over transfer dispute

Colombo, August 6 (Daily Mirror) - The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has issued a warning of an islandwide strike if the Health Ministry fails to resolve issues related to the recent transfer list of doctors.

GMOA Assistant Secretary Dr. Hansamal Wijesuriya told the media that the union would resort to trade union action if a satisfactory solution is not provided by 8:00 a.m. on August 11.

“We have engaged in continuous discussions with the Ministry of Health, but there has been no meaningful intervention regarding the irregularities in the transfer list. If corrective action is not taken by the deadline, we will be forced to launch an islandwide strike,” Dr. Wijesuriya said.

He also accused health authorities of disregarding the GMOA’s repeated concerns and noted that the union’s central committee had unanimously approved the strike as a last resort.

The proposed strike is likely to disrupt services at government hospitals across the country unless a resolution is reached in the coming days.

If you resort to strike action , people will be very unhappy since those who govern the country are giving up their perks and privileges since they are an economic burden to the country

When anyone joins government service they should be prepared to serve in any part of the country. If they cannot do so do not join government service or resign and go home. No exception to medical doctors in government service.

Normally this happens when there is a change of government. This is evident not only in Health sector but in some other govt institutions as well (eg: SL Police where corruption is huge). Hats off to govt for removing DT as IGP, his appointment was questionable. As government servants, the doctors should be prepared to accept transfers. Unlike other govt workers, when they are transferred, they get staff quarters at govt expense.
