Colombo, Jan. 19 (Daily Mirror) - The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has announced that it will launch an islandwide continuous trade union action from January 23.
GMOA spokesperson Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe said the 2026 Budget proposals had failed to address the key issues affecting doctors and the health sector, leading to serious dissatisfaction within the medical community.
He said the proposed trade union action was temporarily suspended earlier following discussions with the President and the Health Minister.
However, Dr. Wijesinghe noted that the promised follow-up discussions did not take place and the agreements reached were not fulfilled. As a result, the GMOA has decided to proceed with strict trade union action.
The association warned that the strike would continue until meaningful solutions are provided to the concerns raised by medical professionals.
