Colombo, August 11 (Daily Mirror) - The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has once again threatened to paralyze the country’s healthcare system, announcing an island-wide strike from tomorrow (11) if its demands are not met — a move that will leave thousands of patients caught in the crossfire.
In a statement, the GMOA’s Central Committee said the strike is being launched over several issues, primarily the implementation of doctors’ transfers.
The union claims it has given the Ministry of Health “adequate time” to address the matter but accuses officials of “turning a blind eye” to their grievances.
“If there is no proper intervention from the Ministry of Health to address the issues related to the transfer lists, we have decided to go for a countrywide strike,” the GMOA warned, giving an ultimatum of 8:00 a.m. on August 11.
The union said it had engaged in “continuous discussions” with the ministry but would proceed with the strike unless “constructive intervention” is made before the deadline.
