The 48-hour island-wide symbolic strike announced by the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) commenced at 8.00 a.m. today, citing the failure to implement written agreements provided by the Health Minister to resolve issues affecting the hospital system and medical officers.

As a result of the strike action, general and routine treatment services at hospitals across the country have come to a complete standstill. However, emergency and essential medical services are continuing to operate, the GMOA said.

The association stated that the trade union action was launched to draw attention to long-standing problems within the healthcare system and to urge the authorities to honor commitments made to doctors.

What happens when doctors go on strike? It causes immense agony and pain to the citizens who seek medical help. Doctors like others too get free education. The free education is funded by those who pay indirect taxes like import duty, VAT, other taxes which are levied on consumer products. So even the poor too pay such taxes. The citizens who pay are like mother and father as they fund the education and healthcare in childhood as well. In the Pancha Bali Sutta, Athithi Bali or serving others with love is a great merit. But not doing so will be a demerit or pava, bad Karma

Not again! Why must the poor patients suffer? This madness should be resolved through dialogue and the leaders, mindful of the inconvenience and harm caused to patients.
