Fugitive constable’s parents arrested

Colombo, Feb 11 (Daily MIrror) - The parents of a police constable attached to the Mount Lavinia Police Station, who fled to Dubai, after escaping with a T-56 firearm and 30 rounds of ammunition, have been arrested.

Police said officers from the Mount Lavinia Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit arrested the suspects and obtained permission from the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court to detain them for 48 hours for further questioning.

Meanwhile, another police constable has also been arrested for allegedly aiding and abetting the suspect in his escape.

The authorities have requested assistance from Interpol to locate the fugitive constable, a resident of Anuradhapura. The officer fled to Dubai after stealing the firearm and ammunition.

Police spokesman SSP Buddhika Manathunga said that the 25-year-old officer took the weapon and ammunition on the night of February 8th, before leaving for his duty shift.

However, he failed to return to the station and stopped answering calls to his mobile phone.

Further investigation revealed that the officer had flown to Dubai on the night of February 8th via Katunayake Airport.

The stolen firearm has not yet been recovered, and four police teams are working to trace both the weapon and ammunition.

Under what law, other than being personal bail sureties, can the parents of a suspect be arrested? I reckon the arrest of the parents is unlawful.

Yes, on the basis they aided the culprit. 88/89, 10 were murdered for one escaped Jvper by then UNP govt where Seeya was in the forefront.... so be happy what we have now

Arresting of the parents cannot be condoned by the Police. This nonsense should stop because this could lead to a precedent where the Police should not inconvenience the parents even for questioning. In the past these tricks were tried by the Police which was totally condemned. What is the Judicial Service Commission doing about this they should stamp their foot. According to law no one can be penalised for the wrong doings of others unless there is some involvement. Parents cannot be used as scapegoats for wrong doings of children to bring pressure on the culprit. The Police being the arm of the law should not stoop to these type of tactics and should act impartially according to the laws of the country.!!!

Arresting the parents is unlikely to yield any tangible benefits or clue in regard to this conduct. What is more is that the Police Department should conduct a thorough investigation to uncover if any similar previous attempts by other ex-police staff were committed. It doubtful if this is the first time a police officer has done such an act?

Arresting and obtaining a detention order for 48 hours is using force on the parents of a suspect. This must not happen and we did not expect this conduct from the Police under AKD. If a statement must be obtained question them and if further questioning is needed call them again or continue on the next day and finish. I think BASL must take this to SC on FR free of charge
