Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila said the decision to increase fuel prices was taken by the Cabinet sub-committee on cost of living and the written approval of the Prime Minister being the Finance Minister and he, as the subject minister had only made the announcement of the fuel price hike.
He told a news conference that the written approval of the Prime Minister was received on June 10 and that it was a collective decision of the government.
The Minister said it was the tradition to announce the fuel price increase by the Finance Ministry and added that he volunteered to make the announcement to protect the leaders of the government.
He said that State Minister of Finance Ajith Nivard Cabraal attended the press conference to announce the fuel price revision, representing the Finance Minister. (Ajith Siriwardana)
