Colombo, Sept. 26 (Daily Mirror) - A group of third-year students of the North Western University in Kuliyapitiya who caused grievous hurt to a new entrant under the pretext of ragging were arrested by the Kuliyapitiya police.
The four students were produced before Kuliyapitiya Magistrate Mihil Chiranthana Haturusinghe and remanded till September 29. They are from Hettipola, Katupotha, Marakavita and Ukuwela areas.
Police told court that the victim had been injured and admitted to the Kuliyapitiiya Teaching Hospital. They stated that the suspects had taken the victim to a secret location and attempted to strip him and when he protested, they had assaulted him.
The police moved for an identification parade, but the lawyers appearing for the suspects submitted that since the suspects and the complainant are students of the same university, they were well known to each other and that an identification parade was not required.
However, the magistrate who allowed the request of the lawyers ordered the prison officials to produce the suspects on the next date of the case.
