Four new Supreme Court justices sworn-in

Four newly appointed Supreme Court Justices took their oaths of office before President Anura Kumara Disanayake this morning (12) at the Presidential Secretariat.

Accordingly, Court of Appeal Justices R.M.S. Rajakaruna, Menaka Wijesundara, Sampath B. Abeykoon and M.S.K.B. Wijeratne were sworn in as Supreme Court Justices during the ceremony presided over by the President.

Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, was also in attendance at this occasion.

it is hearting to see new judges being appointed. This will speed up the process of bringing the daylight bank robbers to justice. "Siya" has no immunity any more.

In Sri Lanka we seem to hung by mere paper qualifications. One does seldom ask why qualifications are so important? A certain qualification means a person(s) who has this qualification has some basic understanding of the subject of their specialization. Please note as the proverb goes 'practice make perfect'. A lot is learnt by working or practicing in that field of studies. Also, no one pays fancy salary for paper qualifications. The salary is provided with an expectation that this person will do a certain task. Please note this same task may be completed better by a person who has less paper qualification but with better experience. Is it any surprise, in most develop countries paper qualification may be looked at in the first job interview. However, when the person moves into another organization or job no one cares for the paper qualification. What they are keen to know his/her skill base to solve a problem in day to day life in their respective role.

Now that the SC has the full cadre of Judges we expect the backlog to be cleared. I know it is not easy. I hope these Judges with their experience can invent a way to whilst delivering justice to get over the backlog within a suitable time frame.
