Colombo, March 17 (Daily Mirror) - The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal by the President to establish four special committees to address the economic and social impacts of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The committees have been tasked with recommending immediate measures to minimize disruptions to the local economy and public life.
An Energy Committee, chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, will oversee urgent procurement activities to ensure a stable supply of fuel, gas, and coal, while also identifying new suppliers.
A second committee, chaired by Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, will focus on maintaining the smooth functioning of the public service, ensuring continuity in essential services and economic activities.
The Committee for Monitoring the Distribution of Essential Goods, chaired by the Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development, will work to ensure uninterrupted supply chains and the availability of essential goods at reasonable prices.
Meanwhile, a fourth committee, led by the Minister of Rural Development, Social Security, and Community Empowerment, will focus on providing welfare support to affected social groups by identifying issues impacting daily life and coordinating timely responses.
