Colombo, Feb 27 (Daily Mirror) - Former Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardhane used fuel worth Rs. 33 million within nine months from January 1, 2024 to September 24, 2024 which amounts Rs. 4 million per month, Leader of the House Bimal Ratnayake said today.
He told Parliament that the current Speaker has only spent Rs. 218,000 for fuel for the month of January.
The Minister said the former Speaker has used nine vehicles and his fuel cost for nine months amounts to Rs. 333 million while the Deputy Speaker has used six vehicles and spent Rs. 13.5 million.
He said the former Deputy Chairpersons of Committees had used four vehicles and spent Rs. 7.2 million for fuel.
Ratnayake said the current Deputy Speaker has used only Rs. 23,000 for fuel while Deputy Chairpersons of Committees have used Rs. 81,000 for fuel for the month of January.
He said the information was revealed by an audit conducted following a decision of the staff advisory committee.
He said it was also revealed that 70 staffers had been employed to maintain the Speaker's bungalow and added that the food cost of the former Speaker's bungalow was Rs.2.6 million in 2023 and Rs. 3.6 million in 2024.
The Minister said the food cost of the current Speaker is only Rs. 33,000 for January.
