Former Moratuwa mayor remanded

Former Mayor of the Moratuwa Municipal Council, Saman Lal Fernando, who was arrested today by the Bribery Commission (CIABOC) was remanded till September 23 by Colombo Cheif Magistrate Asanga S Bodaragama.
According to the CIABOC, the former Mayor was taken into custody around 12:50 p.m. in connection with allegations of causing losses to the government by awarding road development projects of the Moratuwa Municipal Council to his associates.
Investigations have revealed that Fernando had allegedly granted 112 contracts at his own discretion and released payments in violation of accepted procedures.
