Colombo, May 5 (Daily Mirror) - The former Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and former Chief Secretary of the Uva Province Mahesh Lasantha Gammanpila, was released on bail today over the allegation of causing a loss of over Rs. 13 million to the government by importing a shipment of organic fertilizer contaminated with harmful bacteria and pathogens.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali granted bail on five sureties of Rs. 5 milliom each.
The suspect was arrested for despite knowing that the organic fertilizer shipment scheduled to be imported by China's Qingdao Seawin Biotech Group Co.Ltd. was contaminated with pathogenic bacteria, proceeded to issue letters of credit five days prior to receiving environmental reports, thereby causing a financial loss of Rs. 13 million to the government.
