Follow Modi government, reduce taxes on fuel: Sajith tells AKD

Colombo, March 27 (Daily Mirror) - Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa urged President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to reduce taxes on fuel just as the Indian government has done.

He said in a post on X that "Modi government has decided to reduce the Special Additional Excise Duty on petrol and completely remove it for diesel in order to cushion the hardship on the Indian consumer. High time for Anura Kumara Dissanayake to keep up to his election promise and follow suit."

Are you going to pay Rs 80 Billion loss ,incurred by the petroleum corporation when you all were in governess to the treasury. It was the total responsibility of the opposition and present government trying its best clear that massive debt using the taxed levied on the fuel. Reducing taxes has a big downside in a shortage situation. It will further increase the consumption and worsen the situation. Rationing although not a panacea is much more a fair treatment for everybody irrespective of income levels. Whatever it is not having a shortage, low taxes, increased competition and a growing economy is the best answer - if the government is willing to go down that path!

India foreign reserve is currently at $ 694 Billion whereas in Sri Lanka it is $ 7.3 Billion. India can spend even $ 5 billion from the reserve to reduce taxes. But can Sri Lanka do that? Please think wisely before making these suggestion.
