Former Chairman of the Tangalle Urban Council Ravindu Wedaarachchi and his wife Nethmi Harindika Silva who were arrested in connection with obstructing duties of a police officer and alleged attempt of assault, were granted bail by the Walasmulla Magistrate's Court today.

Ravindu Wedaarachchi, the son of SJB MP Dilip Wedaarachchi and his wife were arrested on Monday after they surrendered to the Weeraketiya Police.

They were wanted by the police after a complaint was lodged with the Weeraketiya Police Station last week by a police sergeant attached to Expressway duties at the Bedigama interchange claiming that the MPs son had obstructed duties.

According to the police, the former chairman  had loaded a refrigerator in an unprotected manner into the back of a cab and was about to enter Colombo from the Bedigama interchange on the expressway on Wednesday evening when a police sergeant on duty at the scene informed him that it was unsafe and dangerous and that he could not be allowed to enter.

At that moment, the Chairman and his wife in the cab got angry and tried to interrupt the police sergeant’s duty and verbally attacked him with harsh words.

A video of the incident was circulated on social media and police were looking to arrest them over the complaint.

However, they were avoiding the police a few days.

Former chairman Ravindu had also earlier claimed that a police officer at the scene had pulled him by his shirt and tried to hit him. (DSB)
