Flight delays and cancellations hit BIA

Several flights arriving and departing from Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) have been delayed or cancelled dueto the prevailing bad weather, leaving many passengers stranded.

Airport officials said the disruptions are primarily due to aircraft that were diverted earlier to other airports including Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) and Trivandrum and Cochin airports in India remaining parked and yet to return to BIA, creating a ripple effect on scheduled operations.

Currently, three SriLankan Airlines flights and one FlyDubai aircraft are still stationed at Mattala, and arrangements are underway to transport their passengers to their homes. Additionally, four more aircraft remain grounded at Trivandrum and Cochin after being unable to land in Katunayake due to adverse weather conditions.
