Colombo, July 21 (Daily Mirror) - The Department of Meteorology has issued a 'Red Warning' for strong winds and rough seas in several coastal regions of Sri Lanka urging the public especially fishing and naval communities to exercise extreme caution.
According to the Department, the warning covers sea areas stretching from Chilaw to Mannar via Puttalam, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota. These areas are likely to experience gusty winds reaching 60–70 kmph, making sea conditions rough to very rough.
Wave heights are expected to rise to 2.5 to 3.0 meters in the waters off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota. As a result, nearshore surges are also possible, increasing the risk of flooding or damage in coastal zones.
In light of the dangerous conditions, the department has strongly advised fishermen and naval operators to avoid venturing into sea areas from Chilaw to Mannar and Galle to Pottuvil for the next 24 hours.
In addition, those operating in waters from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankesanthurai are urged to remain on high alert and monitor weather updates closely.
The Meteorology Department continues to monitor the situation and will issue further updates as necessary.
