Colombo, June 7 (Daily Mirror) - The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued a Red Warning for strong winds and rough seas, effective from 6.30 a.m. on June 7 until 10.30 a.m. today (8), urging fishing and naval communities to take immediate precautions.
According to the warning, sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar will be very rough at times, with strong gusty winds reaching 60-70 kmph.
Authorities have strongly advised naval and fishing communities not to venture into these sea areas until further notice due to the hazardous conditions.
Meanwhile, sea areas off the coasts from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaittivu, and from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota, are expected to be rough at times, with winds gusting between 50-60 kmph.
Wave heights are also expected to increase to around 2.0 to 2.5 metres in sea areas extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.
The Meteorology Department has urged the naval and fishing communities to remain vigilant and closely follow future forecasts and warnings.
