Colombo, October 5 (Daily Mirror) - A 44-year-old fisherman from Kalpitiya, Puttalam, was arrested this morning (5) for attempting to smuggle foreign-made cigarettes worth Rs. 4.5 million into Sri Lanka.
The suspect was intercepted by officers from the Airport Police Narcotics Bureau as he tried to take the consignment out of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). He had arrived from Dubai on SriLankan Airlines flight UL-226 at 5:25 a.m.
Authorities found 150 cartons containing 30,000 “Platinum” cigarettes hidden in two pieces of luggage.
The arrested passenger, along with the seized cigarettes, is scheduled to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court on October 8.
