First tranche of World Bank aid to be used for budgetary support

The first tranche of the World Bank's USD 700 million budgetary and welfare support arrives today, State Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said.

"USD 250 million will be received under the first tranche today as budgetary support," he said.

Another USD 250 million in budgetary support will be offered in October.

Meanwhile, the remaining USD 200 million will be for welfare support earmarked for those worst hit by the financial crisis, under the 'Aswesuma' programme he added.

We are living on loans and aid. Why cannot the money stolen from us be brought back. Why not investigate assets of the Parliamentarians and confiscate illegally acquired assets. How did many of these men find money to build their super luxury houses

One of the most important allocations in the budget is the funding for local government elections. Will this be funded now? Or will the Ranil-Rajapaksa SLPP guys come up with another excuse?
