While gradually restoring the delay caused by the closure of schools during the COVID-19 pandemic, the first term of the 2024 school academic year will begin on February 21, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.
While addressing an event in Moneragala, he said it is planned to conduct and complete the Grade Five scholarships examination, GCE Ordinary Level (O/L) and Advanced Level (A/L) examinations during 2024.
While taking a step forward compared to last year, the Ministry has already started the printing of textbooks required for 2024.
"The Government Printing Corporation has already started printing the textbooks, and tenders will be called for from the private sector next month to hand over the printing of the relevant textbooks. It has been decided to complete the printing of textbooks by November 2023," the Minister said.
A new service comprising Development Officers will be started to help principals easily manage school finances and office administration.
Among the Development Officers who are already in public service, about 12,000 will be appointed as staff with a new service considering the number of students in the schools.
Also, the Minister said that he will intervene and work to provide some relief for the water and electricity bills of the schools through the upcoming budget. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
