Colombo, April 10 (Daily Mirror) - The All Ceylon Fireworks Manufacturers Association (ACFMA) says there is a satisfactory demand for firecrackers ahead of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year season, despite disruptions caused by the recent Ditwah cyclone.
ACFMA Chairman Dinesh Fernando told Daily Mirror that firecracker stocks produced for the festive season were significantly damaged due to the cyclone, affecting overall supply.
He added that manufacturers also faced difficulties in receiving raw materials, noting that only about 50 percent of the required potassium nitrate quota for April was issued. “We requested the relevant authorities to streamline the supply process during festive seasons, but no effective action has been taken so far,” he said.
Fernando further pointed out that the prices of key raw materials, including polythene, sulphur, and certain chemicals used in production, have increased due to global market conditions, including the ongoing Middle East conflict. Rising fuel prices have also pushed up transportation costs, further increasing production expenses.
However, he said manufacturers are unable to raise selling prices despite the higher costs, due to market conditions.
He also revealed that around 60 percent of firecracker workers have been affected by the cyclone, while nearly 90 percent of production is concentrated in the Kimbulapitiya area in the Gampaha District.
