Fingerprint database for criminal investigations reaches one million

Colombo, March 23 (Daily Mirror) - A total of one million criminal and court convicts' fingerprints have now been computerised for investigative purposes, police said.

SSP Ruwan Kumara, Director of the Crime Record Division, said that the project is being carried out in collaboration with the Computer Department of the University of Colombo and the Police Fingerprint Unit.

The computerisation process, which began in 2013, allows police to access fingerprint records at any time for investigations.

It is a violation of human rights if people are now even forced to put a fingerprint on the contract in addition to their signature when signing a tenancy agreement.

Ever heard of false signatures? Are they fraud in the eyes of the law ? No one being forced. Don't sign, don't put fingerprint - no problem, go find another place ! It's a free country.

GOOD TO HEAR ONE MILLION ALREADY BEEN COMPUTERISED AND PROCESS BEGAN IN 2013, COULD WE KNOW IF THE PREVIOUS GOVT AND OR THE PRESENT GOVT HAS UPGRADED THE COMPUTERISATION SYSTEMS AS WE ARE NOW IN 2025?. HOPE USING THIS PROCESS SUSPECTS ARE BROUGHT TO COURT EARLY AND CONVICTED WHEREVER POSSIBLE.

My guess is that finger prints of innocent people are also stored in the database. Don't you have to give your finger prints when you get a police clearance certificate. Otherwise how do you have one million finger prints with 22mn Population?
