Colombo, April 23 (Daily Mirror) - The Finance Ministry has urged the public to exercise vigilance when purchasing vehicles as numerous vehicles have been imported into Sri Lanka through various illegal methods from 2015 to 2022.

State Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said the Fraud and Corruption Investigation Commission has seized 112 vehicles imported into Sri Lanka through illicit channels, with a total value exceeding Rs 7,000 million.

"Between 2015 and 2022, these vehicles were unlawfully brought into Sri Lanka through various means. These vehicles are to be confiscated from their current owners. It is the responsibility of the buying parties to find out whether the vehicles have been imported through proper methods," the State Minister said.

Firstyou should take action against those dmt officials whp entered fake details. Why no action taken against them yet. The imported company or individual who imported is the one who should be fined not current owner. Lol

Well is someone does not want something wrong done (I.e. corrupt importers), then public officials won't have a market to engage in corrupt activities on their side.

Set Up Whistel Blower Hotline Wednesday, 24 April 2024 07:33 AM

Set up a whistle-blower hotline. If they can provide concrete evidence, start an investigation. If it’s just to take revenge by implicating someone, bring the caller to court for severe sentencing.

How the hell can you not notice a vehicle import? Are documents being altered or misrepresented? Who is in charge? Everyone knows if there is a political hand and bribes involved the vehicles will pass without a hitch.

Any vehicle which had been allowed in to the country with duty free or reduced duty, should not be allowed to be sold or transferred without paying the waived duties. Also, it should be made an offence for the vehicle be used by any other person than the original importer until the balance duties are paid. This should be enforced retroactively. File charges and impound the vehicle involved.

Sure it should not be the poor current owner who is not able top find if the vehicle had been paid tax for at the customs. What dumb move is this?
