Female inmates in remand prison suffering; Geetha offers help

State Minister Geetha Kumarasinghe said a large number of female inmates are suffering for years in remand prisons for minor offences and assured them of legal assistance.

Ms. Kumarasinghe, who visited female inmates in the Magazine Prison, Colombo, said she noticed that some women were suffering in the prison for more than sixteen years being unable to find sureties for their release.

“Some of them need four government employees who earn more than Rs. 50,000 per month as sureties,” she said.

She said the remand prison is not spacious enough for them and that the roof is leaking on rainy days.

“I assured them to provide legal assistance. I will intervene to help them very soon,” she said.
